The saltwater Crocodile is the world's largest reptile. These amazing creatures are native to saltwater habitats and brackish wetlands from India's east coast across Southeast Asia and also found on the northern coast of Australia and inland for up to 100 kms or more. The Saltwater Crocodile has been reported to grow to lengths of 7 metres!, but the average size of a Saltwater Crocodile is 4 metres long.
The saltwater crocodile is found in the eastern states of Odisha, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. For seeing the Saltwater Crocodiles you can visit these places in India Sunderban National Park (West Bengal), Bhitarkanika National Park (Odisha) national parks of India.
They reproduce in wet season, with female crocodile laying up to 60 eggs at a time. When the crocodiles are born, only a very small number of these survive in the wild and grow to be adult crocodiles. Generally very lethargic, a trait which helps it survive months at a time without food, the saltwater crocodile will usually loiter in the water or bask in the sun during much of the day, preferring to hunt at night.
The crocodile is now a protected species in Australia as well as in India under protection by The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust is the place to save them, however if human danger is a factor, the crocodile will be moved away from possible contact . Many years ago Australia used to export crocodile skin, this is now illegal.
FACT: The temperature of the saltwater crocodile's egg will determine the gender of the new born crocodile.
Lolong (died 10 February 2013) was the largest crocodile in captivity. He was a saltwater crocodile measured at 6.17 m (20 ft 3 in), and weighed 1,075 kg (2,370 lb), making him one of the largest crocodiles ever measured from snout-to-tail.
