 Some facts about national institutes of  india.. 


  • With the vision to impart best technical education to the coming generations in mind, the first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) was set up in 1950. It was IIT Kharagpur. However, the formal declaration of it as a national institute happened only after an act of parliament. In 1956, Parliament of India passed the ‘Indian Institute of Technology (Kharagpur) Act’ declaring it as an Institute of National Importance.



  • Thomason Engineering College, established in 1847 and thus is the oldest engineering college in India which later on, took the name of IIT Roorkee when in 2001, it was designated as an IIT. 

  • IIT Kanpur was the first institute in the whole country to provide Computer Science education which started in 1963.

  • The roof of Dogra Hall at IIT Delhi is a hyperbolic paraboloid. It has been designed to be supported only at the ends, there are no supporting structures in the middle. Owing to the design,the building looks like a ship.

  • IIT Kharagpur let alone occupies an area of 8.5 SqKM  which is equal to the area of Vatican City and Monaco take into account thrice.

  • It is believed IIT Kanpur has its own airstrip for Aeronautical Engineering students.



  • 'Shaastra' is an annual festival in IIT Madras, but what makes it unique is the fact that it is the only student festival to be ISO 9001:2000 certified.
